91% bleaching of Australia’s Great Barrier Reef

(ANSA) – SYDNEY, MAY 11 – The conditions of the Great Barrier Reef of Australia worsen, with a new episode of coral bleaching, just as the UNESCO World Heritage Committee next month in China will decide whether to include in the list of World Heritage Sites ‘endangered’ of the largest coral system in the world, extending 2300km off the northeastern coast of the continent.

The survey conducted by helicopters in the austral summer 2021-22 by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority found that mass bleaching affected 91% of the shoals examined, according to the report cited by the Guardian Australia. It is the fourth episode recorded so far since 2016 and the sixth since 1998. Bleaching occurs when the coral is stressed by above average water temperatures.

The animal in the coral expels the photosynthetic algae it cohabits with, which feeds it and gives it its attractive colors.

Lissa Schindler, campaign manager for the Australian Marine Conservation Society, told the Guardian Australia that the Authority’s report is “terrible news for those who love the Barrier” and “yet another demonstration” that cutting fossil fuel emissions must be a top priority for the next Australian government after the 21 May federal election.
