Navalny: appeal process against sentence at 9 years begins

MOSCOW – A Moscow court today began to examine on appeal the first-degree sentence in which Putin’s main opponent, Alexiei Navalny, was sentenced to nine years in prison in a trial deemed to be clearly political. This was reported by the AFP, according to which Navalny takes part in the videoconference trial from the detention center number 2 in Pokrov, where he is being held.
On March 22, the opponent was convicted on suspicion of embezzling $ 4.7 million in donations to his political organizations, but the allegations are believed to be political in nature and come at a time when the Kremlin has further exacerbated the repression against the opposition.
Alexei Navalny has been in prison since January 2021 for another two and a half year sentence, also considered to be of political origin. The opponent was arrested as soon as he returned to Russia from Germany, where he had been treated for poisoning with a deadly neurotoxin that he had made feared for his life and for which the Russian secret services are suspected. The regional offices and the Navalny Anti-Corruption Foundation have been declared “extremists” by the Russian authorities, who continue to stifle all forms of dissent in the country.
