Brazil: freezing cold, sub-zero thermometers in some states

(ANSA) – BRAZIL, MAY 18 – A wave of polar cold hit São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and other Brazilian states, where the lowest temperatures of the year and even the first snowfalls were recorded.

This morning the thermometers recorded 6 degrees in the Greater Sao Paulo regions, the lowest temperature of the year reported by the National Institute of Meteorology and the lowest for the month of May since 1990, according to the G1 news portal.

Faced with this situation, the government of São Paulo has established that a subway station remains open all night to welcome the homeless. A similar picture was observed in Rio de Janeiro, the tourist capital of the country, with its beaches frequented all year round, where the thermometer dropped to 13.5 degrees in the early hours of the morning.

However, the absolute lowest temperatures were recorded in the southern states: in the city of Bom Jardim, located in a mountainous area of the state of Santa Catarina, the temperature dropped to -2 degrees.

Snow storms have also been reported in Bom Jardim and Urupema, another mountainous municipality of Santa Catarina.
