An article by Yale University professor, renowned historian and writer Timothy Snyder was published in the United States under the title “It should sound: Russia is a fascist state.” He briefly explained why what is written in the title is true. The column was published by The New York Times.

Snyder, who specializes in the history of Eastern Europe, wrote that Nazi Germany was defeated on the fronts of World War II, but not the ideology of fascism. The most striking association of this ideology was Hitler and the Holocaust. But the author believes that this is a very narrow approach. Fascism swept at different times and on a different scale in many countries of Europe. In all its manifestations, it always strives for the victory of the leader’s desires over common sense. According to Snyder, this is exactly what is happening now in Russia, which is waging a real fascist war.

The author of the publication claims that today’s Russia meets most of the criteria that, according to historians, fascism consists of:

  • The cult of one leader – Vladimir Putin
  • The cult of the dead for something great – victory in the Second World War
  • The myth of the former greatness of the empire and the desire to return it
  • Powerful propaganda machine
  • Visual symbols as a sign of ownership – Z and V
  • Mass events in support of the leader
  • Hate speech towards a specific group of people

Snyder marvels at the similarities between Hitler’s Germany and Putin’s Russia. He writes that Russia is repeating this path, sowing around itself suffering and destruction.

The author points out the fallacy of the opinion that a country that once defeated the Nazis cannot itself become such. Until a certain point, fascism did not arouse particular hostility in the Soviet Union, which follows from the allied treaty between the USSR and Germany concluded in 1939. The speeches of the Nazi leaders were reprinted in the Soviet press. In turn, the German authorities pointed to the effectiveness of the Soviet policy of deportation of small peoples.

The famous Nazi, philosopher and thinker Carl Schmitt stated that fascist politics begins with the definition of the enemy. This is what the Soviet Union has been doing throughout its history, and this is what Putin is doing now, hiding behind the term “anti-fascism,” writes Snyder.

Ukrainians are Nazis for the Russian president because they do not recognize themselves as Russians and resist. And anyone who opposes his plan to destroy Ukraine is an accomplice of Nazism/fascism.

There is only one way out of the situation: the fascist leader must be finally and irrevocably defeated, sums up Snyder.
