Iraq: new sandstorm, flights suspended at airports

(ANSAMed) – BEIRUT, MAY 23 – A new sandstorm hit various regions of Iraq forced the authorities to decree the suspension of activities at airports and public offices. Iraqi TV reports al Iraqiya, according to which Prime Minister Mustafa Kazemi has ordered the emergency measure, which has already been taken several times in recent weeks.

This is the ninth sandstorm that hit Iraq in a month due, among other things, to the effects of climate change and desertification.

As reported on TV, due to visibility not exceeding 400 meters, the airports of Baghdad and Erbil suspended air traffic this morning and then restored it a few hours later.

In April, one person suffocated as a result of the sandstorm and about 10 thousand people were hospitalized with symptoms related to respiratory failure. (ANSAMed).
