Colombia: 300,000 security men to vote on Sunday

(ANSA) – BOGOTÁ, MAY 27 – Two days after the crucial presidential elections held in Colombia that could change the political face of the country, the Minister of Defense, Diego Molano, announced the deployment in all Colombian departments of 300,000 men of police and armed forces, to protect the regularity and security of the vote.

In a press conference yesterday, Molano explained that the measure aims to achieve various objectives: to ensure that citizens can vote freely in all polling stations; that the logistic activities of distribution of the material, the arrival and the acquisition of it by the staff of the seat, are accompanied by the security organizations; that there is full protection of the candidates, not only before, but also during the day of the vote, and that even in the event of a second round there is maximum security.

For his part, the director of Migraciones Colombia, Juan Francisco Espinosa, announced that the government has ordered the closure of its land and river border crossings from tomorrow at 18:00 local time, until Monday 30 May at 6:00.

Espinosa indicated that with the suspension of the transit at the borders with Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru and Brazil, an attempt is being made to ensure normality during the day. This is not an exceptional measure, he concluded, because it has always been historically adopted on similar occasions.

On Sunday, over 39 million Colombians will have the opportunity to vote to elect the successor of the outgoing president of the republic Iván Duque for the period 2022-2026.

According to polls, the big favorite in the first round is the leader of the left-wing Pacto Histórico coalition, Gustavo Petro.

The right-wing leader Federico Gutiérrez, with the independent outsider Rodolfo Hernández or, less likely, with the centrist Sergio Fajardo, will challenge him trying to accredit himself for a possible ballot scheduled for June 19. (HANDLE).
