Brazil: former president Lula positive for coronavirus

(ANSA) – BRAZIL, JUN 06 – The former president of Brazil, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva – in government from 2003 to 2010 and running for a third term in the elections on October 2 – has contracted the coronavirus: he makes it known his official profile on the Internet. In addition to Lula, his wife, Rosangela Janja da Silva, with whom he married last month, also became infected. The couple is observing quarantine and electoral commitments have been suspended.

“The former president Lula and his wife Janja have been diagnosed with Covid-19. Both are fine: the former president is asymptomatic and Janja has mild symptoms”, reads the text released on social media.

The leader of the Workers’ Party (PT, left) had already been infected with the coronavirus in January 2021 during a trip to Cuba. Last April, 76-year-old Lula received the fourth dose of the Covid vaccine.

A month ago, the former trade unionist officially launched his candidacy for the presidency of the Republic, for which he will face the current right-wing president, Jair Bolsonaro. According to the latest Datafolha poll, Lula has 48% of the voting intentions and Bolsonaro 27%. (HANDLE).
