Migrants: Lebanon, army arrests 60 people in Tripoli

(ANSAmed) – BEIRUT, JUN 07 – The Lebanese army claimed to have arrested 64 migrants in the last hours as they tried to sail from northern Lebanon in an attempt to reach Europe. This was reported by the command of the Lebanese armed forces, cited by the Lebanese news agency NNA.

The news comes a month and a half after the death at sea, off the northern Lebanese port of Tripoli, of 13 migrants, including women, children, newborns.

They drowned after their boat capsized due to intentional ramming by a Lebanese navy patrol boat, according to eyewitnesses.

In today’s statement, the Lebanese army claims that the migrants arrested are Lebanese, Syrians and Palestinians. Now they are all in prison, except one woman – say the military – because she is pregnant and in a precarious state of health.

After having been a destination for refugees fleeing from other countries for a long time, Lebanon has now for more than two years been a country from which people are fleeing due to the worst financial crisis in its history that has brought a large part of the population to their knees.
