South Africa, dozens still missing after floods 2 months ago

(ANSA-AFP) – DURBAN, June 12 – Dozens of people are still missing two months after the worst floods that hit Durban, the third largest city in South Africa, and the surrounding areas, killing more than 400 people. The government announced today.

“The floods affected 85,280 people and caused 461 deaths. A total of 87 people are still missing,” said Sihle Zikalala, prime minister of KwaZulu-Natal province (south-east).

Torrential rains in April, attributed to extreme weather conditions due to climate change, took the country by surprise, traditionally spared from the storms that regularly hit neighboring states such as Mozambique. More than 300 mm of rain fell within 24 hours in some parts of the province, the equivalent of about one third of the annual rainfall usually recorded in Durban, a major port city of over 3.9 million inhabitants.
