Gaza: from Israel 2,000 new entry permits for unskilled workers

(ANSAmed) – TEL AVIV, JUN 16 – The Israeli military authorities announced today that the number of Gaza workers and traders authorized to enter Israel for work on a daily basis has now risen from 12,000 to 14,000.

The permits, specified a spokesperson for the Coordinator of Israeli Activities for the Territories (Cogat), are distributed according to criteria linked to security considerations. In the future, the spokesman anticipated, the total number of permits should rise to 20,000: but only, he specified, if a situation of calm remains on the ground in the meantime.

Meanwhile, Palestinian sources report that an Israeli navy lookout today opened fire on a fishing boat north of Gaza, wounding three fishermen. One of them, reports the Donya al-Watan website, is in serious condition. A military spokesman commented that the fishing boat had crossed the sea limits set by Israel. He added that the soldiers only opened fire after issuing several warnings which, according to the spokesman, were ignored.
