Spain: Andalusia to the vote, trial at risk for Sánchez

(ANSA) – MADRID, 17 JUN – New electoral passage with a high specific weight in Spain: on Sunday, in fact, the most populous autonomous community in the country (almost 8.5 million inhabitants) will vote in Andalusia. A complicated challenge for Premier Pedro Sánchez’s Socialist Party, a formation that has dominated politically in this territory for decades but which in 2018 lost the regional government to the popular Juanma Moreno, now favored by all polls. Already struggling with the effects of high inflation and the discontent of regular parliamentary partners, the risk for Sánchez is that a clear defeat will make it even more difficult for him to reach the end of the legislature, set in about a year and a half, with his government of minority, the forecasts project the Popular Party (PP) close to an absolute majority (55 seats). But, even for this formation, the Andalusian electoral round is not without headaches. In fact, it seems likely that, to confirm themselves in the government, they will need to come to terms with Vox, a far-right formation that saw its rise to become the third national force in Andalusia.

The unknown factor is in fact whether the Popular Party would accept, in this case, to re-propose the coalition with Vox already created in recent months to govern in Castile and León, or will seek solutions more in line with the promises of “moderation” made several times by Moreno and the new national leader Alberto Feijóo.

Pressed by reporters and the socialist candidate Juan Espadas, Moreno has so far evaded clear answers on the subject, stating that he would prefer to govern alone. For his part, the candidate of Vox Macarena Olona said: “If he needs even just a seat or an abstention, he will not be president without Vox in the government”. Among the candidate parties there are also two other left-wing formations, given however far from the right.
