Colombia: Petro-Hernández presidential ballot tomorrow

(ANSA) – BOGOTÁ, JUN 18 – The National Electoral Register of Colombia is finalizing today the final preparations for tomorrow’s crucial presidential ballot between the left-wing senator Gustavo Petro and the independent conservative Rodolfo Hernández, committed to contending for the succession for the period 2022-2026 to the outgoing Iván Duque.

On the occasion of the first round held on May 29 last, Petro, 62, obtained 40.42% of the votes, while the outsider leader of the Liga de Gobernantes Anticorrupción, 77, collected 28.15% of the votes. The polls carried out in the last three weeks have indicated a strong recovery of Hernández who would have benefited from the support of the center-right and right-wing candidates excluded from the ballot.

Whether the winner is Petro, leader of the Pacto Histórico coalition, or whether the success goes to Hernández, the result will formalize the definitive crisis of the bipartidist system (conservative and liberal) that has dominated Colombia for 200 years. Moreover, if the winner were Petro, a former guerrilla of the M-19 movement, it would be the first time that the left has settled in the presidential Casa de Nariño.

About 40 million people are called to cast their votes starting at 8 (15 Italian) and up to 16 (23 Italian) in an electoral process that will be protected by large security forces and observed by eight international missions and 50 different organizations. (HANDLE).
