The Nobel medal of the editor-in-chief of the Russian Novaya Gazeta, Dmitry Muratov, was sold at the Heritage auction in the United States for $103.5 million, with an initial price of $550,000. Dmitry Muratov and Filipino journalist Maria Ressa were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2021 “for their efforts to protect freedom of expression, which is a precondition for democracy and lasting peace.”
Mr. Muratov announced his intention to sell the medal at the end of March this year. He opposed the Russian invasion of Ukraine and called for an end to hostilities.
Novaya Gazeta soon after announced the suspension of work. The formal reason was the receipt of a second warning from Roskomnadzor about the absence of foreign agents marking in the materials of the publication.
