On June 23, the United States Senate Committee on Foreign Relations supported a resolution calling for Russia to be recognized as a state sponsor of terrorism. However, a vote in the committee does not mean final recognition – the decision has yet to be made by the administration of US President Joe Biden.

This was stated by a member of the Committee on Foreign Relations, Democratic Senator Chris Koons, writes “Voice of America”.

“So far, this is only a resolution supported by the committee. The final decision must be made by the presidential administration. This is a committee resolution calling for the administration, but not the actual recognition of Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism,” he explained.

According to the co-chair of the Committee on Foreign Relations, Republican Senator James Risch, the resolution should receive strong support in a vote in the Senate, which could influence the decision of the Secretary of State:

“The next step is for the US Secretary of State (Anthony Blinken – ed.). He must make this recognition. But here in the Senate, we expect significant support for this resolution. Therefore, I think that this will have an impact on the Secretary of State,” said senator.

Consequences for Russia

James Risch also noted that if the US recognizes a country as a sponsor of terrorism, there will be many consequences:

“Iran is a clear example. There is no doubt that Russia, led by Vladimir Putin, is a state sponsor of terrorism. The act he committed by ordering an attack on Ukraine was a terrorist act. He is a war criminal and is responsible for every crime, committed in his name, every act of destruction, every act of murder. Everything that was committed in Ukraine is his responsibility. And we need to give a strong signal to the world – how we feel about the horrific things that he does.”

As noted, the inclusion in the list entails severe economic and political sanctions from the United States:

  • a ban on the supply of weapons (export and sale);
  • export control of dual-use goods;
  • bans on economic aid;
  • the imposition of various financial and other restrictions.

Now the list of countries sponsoring terrorism includes North Korea, Syria, Cuba and Iran.

The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine recognized Russia as a terrorist state and banned its military symbols on April 1.

Earlier, the site “Today” reported that the United States gave Russia an “iron” warning because of the threats to Lithuania. Also in the United States spoke about the three key goals of the NATO and G7 summits.
