Capitol assault: ‘various republican deputies asked for pardon’

(ANSA) – WASHINGTON, JUN 24 – In the aftermath of the attack on the Capitol on January 6, some Republican deputies who helped Donald Trump in an attempt to overturn the 2020 vote asked senior leaders of the White House for a preventive pardon. It is one of the circumstances that emerged in the fifth public hearing of the parliamentary inquiry commission on January 6. Several prominent contributors to the then president, including Special Assistant Cassidy Hutchinson and Counselor Johnny McEntee, reported that various Republican members of Congress sought leniency: Andy Biggs, Louie Gohmert, Scott Perry, Marjorie Taylor Greene, and Matt Gaetz. Also, according to testimonies, Congressman Mo Brooks sent an email on January 11, 2021 asking for an “all-purpose” pardon for each MP who contested the electoral votes, from Arizona to Pennsylvania. Demands that would confirm the efforts of Republican congressmen to spread disinformation on election results and to pressure the justice department to legitimize allegations of mass fraud. However, none of the parliamentarians obtained pardon. (HANDLE).
