Ecuador: President Lasso, indigenous people aim for coup d’état

(ANSA-AFP) – QUITO, JUNE 24 – The indigenous people who have been demonstrating for a dozen days against the cost of living in Ecuador want to “carry out a coup d’etat”. This is the accusation launched by Ecuadorian President Guillermo Lasso as new clashes resume near the parliament in Quito. Lasso, who said he was “open to a dialogue that would allow concrete results to be achieved”, said on television: “We ask the international community to warn against this attempt to destabilize democracy in Ecuador”.

Nearly 14,000 indigenous protesters are mobilized across the country to protest the rising cost of living and are calling for a drop in fuel prices in particular. The toll of the violent protests has so far been six dead and dozens injured, while Quito is largely paralyzed and its access is blocked by numerous checkpoints. The violent clashes with the police continue near the Parliament: when stones and objects of all kinds are thrown, the agents responded with water cannons and tear gas and sound grenades.
