Russia began to withdraw military equipment from the border with Finland after the country’s statements about joining NATO. The Network showed satellite images, which recorded the Russian military unit 34667, located in the village of Alakurtti in the Murmansk region. It is about 70 km from the Finnish border.

It is reported by Yle.

So, since mid-May, more than 100 pieces of equipment, including dozens of armored personnel carriers, have been removed from the Russian base in the village.

“At least a third or even half of the approximately 2,000 soldiers left the base at the same time,” the publication noted.

Finnish military expert Marko Eklund believes that these Russian invaders were sent to Ukraine.

The path to NATO

  • Without a doubt, the US Senate will support the application of Sweden and Finland to join the North Atlantic Alliance. However, this process was hampered by Turkey.
  • As early as May 16, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan insisted that his country could not say yes to Finland and Sweden joining NATO because of the Kurdish issue.
  • According to The Financial Times, citing an informed source, on May 18, Ankara blocked the start of consideration of applications from these countries under the accelerated procedure.
  • This position of Turkey is very pleasing to Russia, whose President Vladimir Putin has threatened that the plans of Finland and Sweden to join NATO will cause a “backlash” from the Kremlin.
  • As a result, on June 28, following the results of the talks in Madrid, Turkey agreed to unblock the entry of Sweden and Finland into NATO.
  • On June 29, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg announced that he was officially inviting Finland and Sweden to join NATO.

Recall that the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin said that the Russian Federation would react if NATO deployed its forces in Sweden and Finland.
