(ANSA) – ROME, JULY 09 – The Russian veto on the cross-border aid mechanism for Syria represents “a serious blow to human rights” according to the Secretary General of Amnesty International, Agnès Callamard.
“This veto comes after a series of compromises with Russia and China, starting with the closure of two crossings in the last two years and ending with the dismantling of the mechanism by the United Nations – he said in a statement -. The draft resolution on vetoed, provided for further compromises with Russia on the conditions for the continuation of cross-border aid “. “Russia – he added – has presented an alternative resolution for a renewal of only six months which was supported by only two members of the Council, much less than the nine votes requested.
“The Russian veto will effectively close the last lifeline for at least four million people in northwestern Syria who depend on UN aid for survival.” (HANDLE).
