Srebrenica: genocide 27 years ago, thousands in commemorations

(ANSAmed) – BELGRADE, JULY 11 – In Bosnia-Herzegovina since the early hours of this morning, thousands of people are flocking to the memorial cemetery of Potocari, on the outskirts of Srebrenica, where official commemorations are scheduled for the 27th anniversary of the genocide of over 8,000 Muslims by the Bosnian Serb troops under the command of General Ratko Mladic. Together with the interventions of political and religious personalities, the program provides for the burial of the remains of another 50 victims of the massacre, identified in the last 12 months. As in other years, there will be no Serb and Bosnian Serb exponents who continue to deny the genocide, as international justice has called the worst massacre in Europe since the Second World War. Ratko Mladic and Radovan Karadzic, respectively military chief and political leader of the Bosnian Serbs, the main perpetrators of the Srebrenica massacre and the long siege of Sarajevo, were both sentenced to life imprisonment by the Hague Tribunal. The 1992-1995 Bosnian War resulted in over 100,000 deaths and two million refugees. (ANSAmed).
