(ANSA) – ROME, JULY 19 – A 16-year-old Ukrainian boy told the British newspaper Guardian that he was held hostage by Russian soldiers for 90 days and witnessed the torture inflicted by the Moscow military on other prisoners inmates in cells next to his own.
The young man, Vladislav Buryak, who was ‘separated’ from his family on 8 April at a checkpoint while attempting to escape the Russian-besieged city of Melitopol, was released after months of negotiations between his father, Oleg. , a local Ukrainian official, and Russian soldiers, who wanted to exchange Vladislav for a person of greater interest to the Russian army.
His report on the imprisonment mentions the violent interrogations and ill-treatment inflicted – including brutal beatings – on detainees by Russian and pro-Russian separatist forces. The boy’s memories are dramatic: “They made me wash the floor of the room they used for interrogations, as well as clean the agents’ rooms and throw out their garbage – he said -. The cell where I was locked up was a few meters from where the interrogations led. I could hear people screaming and when I cleaned the room I saw bloodstains. ” (HANDLE).
