Brazil: the inhabitants are 212.7 million, + 7.6% in 10 years

(ANSA) – BRAZIL, JULY 22 – The population of Brazil has grown by 7.6 percent in ten years and has reached 212.7 million inhabitants, with an aging trend. This was shown by a study conducted by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (Ibge).

The survey revealed that citizens aged 30 and over were 56.1 percent of the population last year, up from 50.1 percent a decade ago. The aging trend is also confirmed in the group of people aged 60 or over, which in 2012 occupied 11.3 percent and currently stands at 14.7 percent.

Aging is due to “a marked decrease in fertility that has occurred in recent decades,” explained Gustavo Geaquinto, a researcher at IBGE. The southeastern region, with the states of Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo, has 16.6 percent of its population aged 60 or older, the highest percentage in the country. Afro-descendant citizens are also growing, equal to 56.1 per cent of the total population in 2021, a figure 3.1 per cent higher than that indicated in 2012. (ANSA).
