Tunisia: seats open for the referendum on the new Constitution

(ANSA) – TUNIS, JUL 25 – The seats for the popular referendum on the new Constitution wanted by President Kais Saied have opened in Tunisia. The more than 9 million citizens called to vote will simply have to say whether or not they approve the text proposed by Saied. There is no quorum, so the Charter will pass with a “yes” majority of the votes cast, the Electoral Commission (Isie) specified. The turnout will in fact be the main unknown factor in this vote.

The new Constitution, if approved, will grant ample powers to the president who will exercise the “executive” function with the help of a government and will also have a strong influence on the legislative and judiciary. Precisely for this reason, the opposition and civil society have expressed fears of an authoritarian drift in the country since its publication and urge them not to go to the polls or vote no. 84,000 agents were deployed to monitor the voting operations at the polling stations, which will close at 10pm (local time, 11pm in Italy). On the other hand, the missions of international observers are few: that of the African Union, the Arab League and the Carter Center. The official results will be announced between 26 and 27 July, the Electoral Commission (Isie) said. (HANDLE).
