Covid: cases and hospitalizations in GB are returning, without restrictions

(ANSA) – LONDON, 29 JUL – Peak exceeded and contagions from Covid down again in the United Kingdom, after the rebound of the last month linked, as in other European countries, to the spread of Omicron 4 and 5 variants, and then to the subsequent sub-variant BA.2.75 (or Centaurus) imported after May from India where it had revealed a high transmissibility. This is confirmed by the weekly sample estimates updated after 20 July by the Office for National Statistics (Ons), indicating a total of 3.2 million presumably infected people in the country (between symptomatic and asymptomatic) against 3.8 million in the Previous week.

The number of hospitalized in the Kingdom’s hospitals is also decreasing, both in ordinary wards and in intensive care; while the deaths – which have always remained below the percentages of previous pandemic waves – are now quantified below 100 per day on average. All against the background of the maintenance of the strategy of lifting all restrictions (including the obligation of a mask) introduced as a sort of ‘free all’ by the government of Boris Johnson for six months now.

However, specialists insist on recommending caution in particular to the most advanced age groups and to people at risk in general; for which an expansion of the offer of the fourth dose of the anti Covid vaccine (or second booster dose) is expected from September, with the inclusion of all over-50s residing in the country.
