France: Beluga reunited in the Seine, is very ‘elusive’

(ANSA) – PARIS, AUGUST 05 – The beluga sighted for the first time on Tuesday morning in the Seine and located yesterday near a dam, about 100 km from Paris, was found today in the same area but is “very elusive”: it is what Gérard Mauger, vice president of the Groupe d’Etude des Cétacés du Cotentin (GEEC) reports, specifying that the animal has “the same behavior as yesterday: we have the feeling that it is very elusive, it makes very brief appearances on the surface, followed by long apneas “. “We try to approach it with great caution – added the expert – but it is a difficult situation, it changes direction very often”. Even today, the beluga is located between the Poses dam and that of Saint-Pierre-la-Garenne, more or less halfway between the port of Le Havre and Paris.

According to Mauger, four boats are in the area, that of the fire brigade, that of the French office responsible for biodiversity, that of the Sea Shepherd association and that of the Société nationale de sauvetage en mer.

Yesterday, the prefecture of the area specified that his state of health is “worrying”, as “he seems to have skin alterations and has lost weight”. The beluga is a protected species of cetacean that usually lives in cold waters. The authorities appealed for caution and asked “the entire population not to attempt to approach or come into contact with the animal to facilitate the work of all state services mobilized for wildlife conservation”.
