(ANSA) – BORDEAUX, AUGUST 11 – The prefecture of Gironde, in the south-west of France, announced today that almost 6,800 hectares of pine forest went up in smoke after the vast fire in Landiras resumed burning on Tuesday afternoon.
“Nearly 1,100 firefighters are engaged,” the prefecture said, adding that “further reinforcements” are still expected on site. Last night, the toll rose to 600 hectares of burnt forest, but the scorching temperatures that “are expected to continue until Saturday and are combined with very dry air” create a “very serious risk of fire outbreak,” according to the statement. “The conditions are particularly difficult: the vegetation and soils are particularly dry after more than a month of rain,” he explained.
