Ecological disaster Oder, Poland rules out mercury cause

(ANSA) – ROME, AUGUST 14 – Laboratory tests carried out on samples taken from the waters of the Oder river have revealed high levels of salt, but no trace of mercury: the Polish Ministry of the Environment has announced, referring to the deaths of fish that in recent days it has hit the watercourse between Poland and Germany. The international media reported it.

The cause of the ecological disaster, therefore, is still unknown. Previously it was assumed that the death of thousands of fish – as well as ducks and birds – was a quantity of mercury discharged into the river or released from the seabed due to dredging works. Anna Moskwa, Minister of Climate and Environment, said analyzes of water samples taken in both Poland and Germany revealed high levels of salt.

On Friday, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said that “huge quantities of chemical waste” were probably dumped into the second longest river in the country, pledging to do everything possible to limit the extent of the ecological disaster.

For his part, the Polish Minister of the Interior had offered a reward of the equivalent of around € 200,000 to anyone who provided information on those responsible. (HANDLE).
