Guterres, nuclear risk at its highest point in decades

(ANSA) – ROME, AUGUST 23 – “The nuclear risk has reached the highest point in recent decades”: the UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, said to the Security Council, as reported by the BBC. “The tools that have kept us away from a catastrophic world war are more important than ever, but they must be fit for today’s rapidly deteriorating international peace and security environment,” he added.

Guterres called on countries to conduct negotiations to “end the nuclear arms race once and for all”. His statements come after his visit to Ukraine, where he discussed the crisis in the area of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, in which renewed fighting between the forces of Moscow and Kiev raises fears of a disaster on the scale of that of Chernobyl in 1986. .

Guterres also called for the same commitment to dialogue that led to the export of agricultural products from Ukrainian ports, while also allowing the transport of Russian fertilizers. “I renew my appeal to all Member States to show flexibility and a willingness to compromise in all negotiations,” said the UN Secretary General.
