A fourth leak has been identified in the Baltic Sea above the Nord Stream gas pipelines. For Maurice Gourdault-Montagne, former secretary general of the Quai d’Orsay and former adviser to Jacques Chirac, guest of Europe Matin on Thursday, this act “shows that this war is spreading and that our infrastructures are vulnerable”.

Will the alleged sabotage of the Nord Stream gas pipelines turn the war upside down? The Nord Stream gas pipelines linking Russia to Germany under the Baltic Sea have both been affected by spectacular leaks. Ukraine has denounced a terrorist attack by Moscow, while Russia dismisses the accusation of the West and points the finger at the Americans, who evoke absurd accusations.

“This war is spreading and our infrastructures are vulnerable”

“For the first time, we see the war coming out of the Ukrainian theater”, observed Maurice Gourdault-Montagne, former secretary general of the Quai d’Orsay. Guest of Europe Matin Thursday, the former adviser to Jacques Chirac wondered about the nature of this act qualified as “sabotage”. “Who perpetrated this destruction of the two pipelines Nord Stream 1, which has been in operation since 2011, and Nord Stream 2 which was not yet in operation but whose tests have been done and which is therefore currently full of gas. We will have to wait at least three weeks to verify the exact nature of the damage”, he declared on Europe 1.

“But what it shows is that this war is spreading and that our infrastructures are vulnerable. There, it’s gas. It can also be oil pipelines since the transport of Russian oil is always done by way of land to certain countries. It can be submarine cables, optical cables, etc. So we are in a situation of vulnerability which only amplifies the intensity of the war and we move on to a higher phase”, has advanced Maurice Gourdault-Montagne on Europe 1.
