Germany arrests 25 suspected of participating in terrorist group that planned coup d’état

The police of Germany arrested 25 people who are suspected of being part of a group terrorist in extreme right who planned an armed attack against the Lower House of the German Parliament, the Bundestag🇧🇷 The arrest took place this Wednesday, the 7th. According to the Public Ministry, the prisoners are members of the group “Reichsburger” (“Citizens of the Reich”, in Portuguese) and are suspected of “concrete preparations to violently enter the Bundestag with a small armed group”. “We suspect that an armed attack was planned against the constitutional bodies,” said Marco Buschmann, Germany’s justice minister. In all, nearly 3,000 security agents were deployed in 130 search and seizure operations. In addition to the 25 arrested, another 27 people are being investigated for belonging to the group. “The continuation of the investigation will make it possible to determine whether there are elements that constitute the crime of preparing an act of high treason against the State,” added the Public Ministry.

The group was formed in 2021 and its main objective is to “overcome the existing state order in Germany and replace it with its own form of state”, which could only be carried out using “military means and violence against representatives of the state”, authorities explained. The group’s members are united by their rejection of institutions and the liberal, democratic fundamental order, say government prosecutors. Recently, far-right acts of violence have been considered the main threat to public order, ahead of the jihadism🇧🇷 A few months ago, authorities dismantled a small far-right group suspected of planning attacks in the country, including the kidnapping of the health minister.
