Brazilian embassies are monitoring the situation and the government is studying ways to offer humanitarian aid; 7.8 magnitude quake leaves more than 1,900 dead
O Ministry of Foreign Affairs do Brasil reported that, so far, there is no record of Brazilians among the dead and injured by the earthquake that hit Turkey and the Syria in the early hours of this Monday, the 6th. The earthquake of magnitude 7.8 left more than 2,300 dead. According to Itamaraty the embassies in Ankara and Damascus, as well as the Brazilian consulate general in Istanbul are monitoring the situation. “The Brazilian government is providing ways to offer humanitarian aid to populations affected by the earthquake. There is, so far, no news of dead or injured Brazilians”, says a statement, which also speaks of “great concern”. “The Brazilian government expresses its solidarity and most sincere condolences to the peoples of Turkey and Syria and to the families of the victims”, completes the message. As Jovem Pan showed, the tremor was felt at 4:17 am (22:17 on Sunday, Brasilia time) and occurred at a depth of 17.9 kilometers, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). Hundreds of people are believed to be trapped under the rubble and the death toll is expected to rise as rescuers sift through mounds of debris in towns and villages across the region.
