Austria will help Ukraine in demining territories: it will finance equipment for 2 million euros

Austria will help Ukraine in demining territories. The Ukrainian government will finance 2 million euros (about $2.15 million) for special equipment for this purpose for Ukraine.

It is reported by CNN. “Since the beginning of Russian aggression, civilians in Ukraine have been suffering from worldwide banned anti-personnel mines and explosive remnants of war. These life-threatening obstacles deny people access to essential infrastructure across the country,” the Austrian government said in a statement.

They also added that dangerous landmines make it difficult to use agricultural land.

The Austrian government noted that Currently, more than 250,000 km² of Ukrainian territory has already been “contaminated” with landmines.which is about three times the size of Austria.

“About 10.6 million people in Ukraine are assigned to mine clearance assistance,” the authorities stated.

At the same time, Federal Chancellor Karl Nehammer said that “not a single Austrian soldier will set foot on Ukrainian soil to clear mines while it is a war zone.”

“We provide financial support for demining and provide 2 million euros to support the ITF in demining,” he explained.

Funds from the Foreign Disaster Fund of the Foreign Ministry (AKF) will be used to finance demining equipment for Ukraine to mitigate the acute humanitarian emergency in Ukraine.

It is worth noting that earlier the views of Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen regarding the provision of assistance to Ukraine in the demining of territories differ from the opinion of the government. The head of state believes that neutrality should not prevent urgent assistance, while the government believes that this should be done after the end of the war.

Recall that in Austria, which signed and ratified the Rome Statute, they said that Russian President Vladimir Putin would be arrested if he enters the country’s territory. After that, the dictator will be handed over to the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague (Netherlands).
