Russia and Ukraine blame each other for the destruction of the dam; Zelensky summoned the Security Council to an emergency meeting

According to the Minister of the Interior of Ukraine, Igor Klymenko, 24 sites were flooded after the destruction of the dam. O Kremlin says partial destruction was an “act of deliberate sabotage”. “It is undoubtedly an act of deliberate sabotage on the Ukrainian side, which was planned and carried out on the orders of Kiev,” said Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov. The spokesman vehemently refuted the accusations of the Ukrainian authorities, which attributed the attack to Moscow. “Total responsibility rests with the Kiev“, insisted Peskov, saying that one of the objectives is to leave Crimea without access to water.
The structure is crucial for supplying water to the peninsula of Crimea. The dam had been occupied by Russia at the beginning of the invasion of Ukraine. According to Ukraine, almost 16,000 people are in the “critical zone”, threatened by flooding, and, according to Klymenko, at least 1,000 civilians have been evacuated from the region destroyed by water. In addition, the collapse of the dam puts the nuclear power plant at risk. Zaporizhzhia, which is located 150 kilometers from the dam. even though it is controlled by the Russians, the plant is maintained by a Ukrainian team. According to a statement from Ukrhydroenergo, a hydroelectric generation company in Ukraine, the plant uses water from the reservoir for condensers and security systems, such as the cooling pond.
