Covid: Brazil, Carnival at risk for fear of a new wave

(ANSA) – BRAZIL, NOVEMBER 25 – The number of municipalities in the state of Sao Paulo, the richest and most populous in Brazil, has risen to 77, where the 2022 Carnival will not be celebrated, due to the risk of a new coronavirus epidemic , while the prospect is also beginning to worry other cities in the country, including Salvador de Bahia, known for being one of those places that most receives tourists at the carnival.

The WHO deputy director, Brazilian Mariangela Simao, said today that large concentrations of the public should be avoided.

According to the expert, the reappearance of the coronavirus “in Europe is the result of excessive flexibility, with people gathering and ceasing to wear masks”.

The Municipality of Sao Paulo, the largest megalopolis in the South American country, reported that the celebrations are for now confirmed, but that they could be suspended “in the event that the epidemiological situation is not favorable in the upcoming dates” to the carnival.

According to the newspaper O Globo, from mid-February to the first week of March 2022 it is estimated that about 15 million people will take to the streets in São Paulo alone.

In the meantime, the Rio de Janeiro prosecutor has recommended the mayor, Eduardo Paes, to “re-examine” the criteria with which he decided to organize the New Year and Carnival parties.

In Salvador de Bahia, where one of the busiest carnivals traditionally takes place, “the chances of cancellation are 90%,” wrote the news portal Metropoles, after consulting government sources. While, according to O Globo, the celebrations are also “threatened” in Olinda and Recife, two cities in the state of Pernambuco (north-east) with a great carnival tradition. (HANDLE).
