Ethiopia: forces loyal to the government recapture Shewa Robit

(ANSA-AFP) – ADDIS ABABA, 01 DEC – Ethiopia declared today that the forces of the federal government have recaptured Shewa Robit, a town 220 kilometers from Addis Ababa, after the Tigray rebels had declared they had taken control last week in their advance towards the capital.

Government spokesman Legesse Tulu said Shewa Robit is among the small towns taken over by forces loyal to Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, who announced last week that she would go to the front to lead soldiers on the front line in the war that has been opposing the two sides for over a year.

Legesse told state media that the towns and their surroundings “were liberated by the terrorists of the TPLF”, referring to the Popular Front for the Liberation of Tigray group.

The government “in a short time” will also retake the cities of Dessie and Lalibela, he added.

The United States has openly criticized the handling of the war by Abiy, Nobel Peace Prize 2019 for the historic move of ending hostility with Eritrea and considering its rise as a key reformer and ally.

China and Russia, on the other hand, have been more cautious.

The Ethiopian Foreign Ministry today posted on Twitter images of a press conference by Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi who, during his visit to the Horn of Africa country, said that “China is opposed to any interference in the internal affairs of Ethiopia “. (ANSA-AFP).
