Switzerland: Cassis elected president, an ‘Italian’ after 24 years

(ANSA) – BERN, 08 DEC – Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis was elected today by Parliament as the next President of the Confederation for 2022. “We will be stronger and more united than ever”, said Cassis, who will take up the post starting from January 1st, alluding in particular to the internal controversies over the management of the pandemic and the anti-Covid restrictions, confirmed last month by a popular referendum after a campaign full of tensions. He will be the fifth politician from Italian-speaking Switzerland to hold the office of president, 24 years after Flavio Cotti.

His election with 156 votes out of 197 was foreseen as part of the alternation between the 7 members of the Swiss government for the annual rotating presidency, in place of the Economy Minister Guy Parmelin. Health Minister Alain Berset was elected as his deputy, who according to the rotation principle should succeed him in 2023.

An exponent of the Liberal Party and a doctor by profession, 60 years old, Cassis joined the executive in 2017 and will also maintain the role of Foreign Minister. Together with the outgoing president Parmelin, in recent months he had been at the center of strong internal criticism for the complicated relations with the EU, in particular for the interruption of the talks underway for years to reach a cooperation agreement with Brussels.
