(ANSA) – NEW YORK, 11 DEC – An American close to President Joe Biden is the new executive director of UNICEF. Coinciding with the 75th anniversary of the UN agency for children, Secretary General Antonio Guterres has appointed Catherine Russell in the place of Henrietta Fore who has given up for family reasons.
Russell, who currently works in the White House as an assistant to the president, “brings decades of experience to the new post,” said UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric.
“Our loss is a gain for Unicef because children around the world will have a better life under Cathy’s leadership in her new role,” Biden commented in a statement released by the White House following the announcement that the his “trusted and indispensable adviser” would pass to the UN.
