Vatican discloses schedules of voting at the conclave and reveals the time of the first smoke

THE Vatican On Tuesday (6) the conclave schedule-choice of the new Pope-which starts on Wednesday (7), and around 14h (Brasília time) will be possible to know whether a new Pope was elected or not. White smoke indicates that the new Pope was chosen, otherwise there will be a black smoke. Smokes mean the burning of cardinals. It is not expected that tomorrow already has an ad, if it happens it will be a surprise. For a new pontiff to take the position, a papable cardinal, needs two thirds of the votes, which indicates 89 days of the 113 cardinals. On Thursday (8), the second day of voting, the cardinals will vote up to four times, which indicates that up to two “rounds” of smoke will be known. This is the decisive day: in the last two conclaves, the Pope’s definition was on the second day.

Wednesday, May 7

  • 5h-Pre-Conclave Mass
  • 11h30 – Entrance to the Sistine Chapel, collective and individual oaths. After closing the doors, there is a speech inside the chapel, opening for possible questions and then voting
  • 14h – First and only vote of the day and forecast for first smoke to leave the sistina chaminé

Thursday, May 8

  • 5h30 – First vote of the second day. There will only be smoke if a pope is actually elected.
  • 7h00 – The second round of voting happens and, if there is no Pope, the black smoke will leave the chimney of the Sistine Chapel.
  • 12:30 pm – Third round of voting. There will only be smoke if a pope is actually elected.
  • 14h00 – Last round of the day. If the Pope is defined, white smoke from the chimney of the sistine chapel will be out. If there is no definition, black smoke will come out.

The conclave will be chaired by Cardinal Pietro Parolin, in the absence of Dean, Cardinal Re, who is 91 years old. If no name is chosen on the second day of voting, there will be a third day of meeting. If you have not been elected any pontiffs, the church remains without a Pope, a 24 -hour break is made for prayers. In all 133 cardinals participate in the Conclave, and 15 of them are considered papeable. They are under 80 and there are diplomats, country men, theologians and mediators. The conclave occurs throughout how many rounds of voting are necessary until a candidate gets a two -thirds majority, which triggers the white smoke that announces to the world that a new papacy began.
