(ANSA) – GENEVA, DECEMBER 17 – At least 100,000 people have fled their homes in the last two weeks due to inter-municipal clashes that have broken out in the region of the far north of Cameroon, but the real number of people fleeing could be much higher, United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) said today According to the agency’s estimates, more than 85,000 people have fled to neighboring Chad in recent days, while at least 15,000 Cameroonians have been forced to leave their homes inside. of their country. The vast majority of new arrivals in Chad are children and 98% of adults are women, UNHCR spokesman Matthew Saltmarsh stressed in Geneva.

Together with the authorities, UNHCR, other UN agencies and humanitarian partners are rushing to provide life-saving assistance to people forced from their homes. The agency is thus rapidly expanding its operations to assist affected people in Cameroon and new refugees in Chad.

Clashes erupted on 5 December in the border village of Ouloumsa following a dispute between shepherds, fishermen and farmers over water resources, with the climate crisis exacerbating competition for resources, especially water. the spokesperson added.
