US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who also temporarily serves as President Donald Trump National Security, is working on the reform of the department. He plans to significantly reduce the staff of the National Security Council and make radical changes to his work.
This was reported by NBC News, citing four sources. According to the interlocutors of journalists, the reduction in the condition of the body will be partially aimed at the closer correspondence of his work, since Trump makes a decision.
According to the plan, instead of the large personnel working on the provision of the president, the National Security Council will function on top, where the president will manage the national security adviser, which will then manage employees to fulfill these orders.
The publication recalled that the National Security Council, which is regulated by the White House, is the main center of coordination of the political process in state institutions to help the president make decisions on foreign policy and national security. The number of his employees who can reach several hundred people has changed for different presidents.
When Donald Trump joined the office, 300 employees worked in the department, and in January 2025 their number decreased to about 150.
Expected reform can lead to a reduction in the staff to 50-60 people, but the final decision has not yet been made.
According to one of the sources of journalists, Rubio does not plan to dismiss any employee. He will give them to other agencies.
