The holy throne can be a place for a new attempt to achieve peace between Ukraine and Russia. This opinion was expressed by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio during his visit to Rome.
He positively reacted to the proposal of the recently chosen pope Leo XIV on the holding of peace negotiations in the Vatican. It is reported by AR and Politico.
Rubio, who visits the capital of Italy, met with Cardinal Matteo Tsuppi, a representative of the Vatican in Ukraine. In a commentary on the journalists before the meeting, he emphasized that although he would not call the Vatican a direct intermediary, he considers him a place where “both sides may feel comfortable.”
“So, we will talk about all this, and, of course, we will always be grateful to the Vatican for his readiness to play this constructive and positive role,” Rubio said.
After the failure of peace negotiations in Istanbul, where Russian President Vladimir Putin did not appear, the Vatican openly announced his readiness to provide his platform for meeting with Ukrainian and Russian delegations. Cardinal Pietro Passin called the failure of the Istanbul summit “tragic” and emphasized that the holy throne remains open to the dialogue and was ready to promote the highest level.
Pope Lev XIV, selected last week, already made it clear that the world in Ukraine will become the main priority of his service. He had a telephone conversation with President Vladimir Zelensky, and in his first Sunday appeal “the suffering of the beloved Ukrainian people” is mentioned.
Earlier, Marco Rubio said that the United States presented the powerful world of the world to end the war in Ukraine. He emphasized that death and destruction should finally stop.
Rubio had a telephone conversation with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on May 17. During the conversation, they discussed the results of negotiations in Istanbul, which took place the day before.
Earlier it was reported that the Russian delegation at Istanbul negotiations undertook unrealistic and unacceptable requirements. Russia demands from Ukraine to withdraw troops from all partially occupied Ukrainian regions and threatens to occupy at least two – and the territorial appetites of the aggressor, as a rule, increase.
It was also known that the United States prepared a peace plan, which consists of 22 points, which is provided for by the end of the war between Ukraine and Russia. Nevertheless, the Russian dictator Vladimir Putin actually refused to discuss these initiatives.
