Currently, the US military presence in South Korea is about 28,500 soldiers.
Trump should be taken into account as part of an informal revision of the policy of North Korea. At the same time, the decision has not yet been made and was not on the table with the US president.
The Pentagon did not officially comment on journalists with a possible reduction in the contingent in South Korea. The representative of the National Security Council, Pete Nguen also did not answer the question, but added that Trump is committed to the “complete denuclearization” of North Korea.
Journalists recalled that during his first term Trump announced his intention to revise the US military presence in Korea. However, in April this year, US military leaders in Asia warned Congress from a reduction in force, calling this a risk in the context of opposition to North Korea, China and Russia.
US Army General Xavier Branson, commander of the troops in Korea, said that the reduction “creates problems”. Admiral Samuel Paparo, commander of the Indo-Pacific command, also emphasized that the decrease in the contingent “reduces the ability to win in conflicts.”
White House officials say that the decision on the number of troops will not be made until it becomes clear in which direction the war is in Ukraine, and whether Washington will continue to provide military support to Kyiv.
According to WSJ, South Korea considers the US military presence as a prohibitive factor against the restoration of war on the Korean Peninsula, as well as against China, which claims to be part of the South China Sea and threatens to take control of Taiwan.
