“The Great Victory of Trump”: NATO leaders approved an increase in defense costs up to 5% of GDP

The leaders of the NATO member state at the Gaga Summit (the Netherlands) approved a historical plan to increase the costs of defense. States agreed to increase defense costs to 5% of GDP and confirmed their “unshakable commitment” of mutual security.

This is indicated in the final announcement of the summit in the Hague published on the Blok website. According to Bloomberg, the decision of 32 members of the North Atlantic Treaty is a “big victory” of US President Donald Trump, who repeatedly criticized his European allies for insufficient security expenses.

The US President, who hesitated in his obligations on the eve of the summit, called him the “great” on Wednesday and promised his support for Article 5, which requires members to defend each other from attacks.

“I support this, so I was here. If I had not supported this, I wouldn’t be here, ”Trump said at a meeting with the Prime Minister of the Netherlands wild Chovof when he was asked about Article 5.

The declaration says that the alliance member states “are taking expenses for the main defense requirements by 2035, as well as the costs of defense and security in 5 % of GDP per year in order to guarantee compliance with individual and collective obligations in accordance with Article 3 of the Washington Treaty”.

It is noted that a new goal, which will mean an increase in comparison with the current purpose of 2%of expenses, is a response to “serious threats and safety problems, in particular, a long -term threat represented by Russia for Euro -atlantic security and a constant threat of terrorism.”

“By 2035, the alliance member states will provide at least 3.5 % of GDP annually on the basis of a coordinated determination of NATO expenses for defense to finance the main defense requirements and achieve NATO goals in the field of potential.

Countries will also direct 1.5 % of GDP annually to protect the critical infrastructure of the bloc, protecting networks, ensuring the readiness and stability of civil society, giving an incentive for innovation and the development of the defense and industrial base.

“Regardless of whether the state has been achieved on Wednesday, expenses remain open. Spain and Slovakia have already expressed doubts about the allocation of such large money for defense, and the goals themselves give the countries more freedom of action in how they measure their military expenses, ”writes Bloomber.

NATO Secretary General Mark Ruth said that this year all NATO members will finally reach the previous goal of 2%, which they agreed more than ten years ago.

According to OBOZ.UA, in the declaration, after the top in the Hague, the heads of state and NATO states, NATO confirmed the unshakable commitment to the principles of collective defense, enshrined in Article 5 of the Washington Treaty. The document does not contain a direct condemnation of the military aggression of Russia against Ukraine, it is officially recognized as a long -term threat to Euro -Atlantic security.
