(ANSA) – ROME, DEC 20 – Thailand has recorded the first case of Omicron transmitted locally: the Ministry of Health announced today, according to the Guardian.
The infection was detected in a Thai woman infected by her husband, a Colombian who returned to the country from Nigeria in late November.
The woman “is potentially the first in Thailand to receive Omicron from a foreign traveler, her husband is the first case transmitted locally,” said Chakrarat Pittayawonganon, an official with the Department of Disease Control.
Both spouses had completed the vaccination course with the AstraZeneca vaccine.
Meanwhile, according to the newspaper, the Thai government is considering whether to reintroduce the quarantine for visitors arriving from abroad precisely to combat the Omicron variant.
