Block negotiators circumvented impasse with Iran and closed consensus agreement for the statement that will be issued on Sunday (6), on behalf of their political leaders
THE BRICS It intends to express “serious concerns” with the increase in “unilateral” tariffs, in the final statement of its summit meeting in Rio de Janeiro, which begins this Sunday (6), according to the text project agreed on Saturday by negotiators. “We express our serious concern with the increase of unilateral tariff and non -tariff measures that distort trade and are inconsistent with the rules of the World Trade Organization,” the document says.
The text does not mention President Donald Trump, who said this week that he plans to send letters to US business partners in the coming days to inform them of the impending application of announced tariffs. “Given the resurgence of protectionism, it is up to emerging nations to defend the multilateral regime of commerce and reform international financial architecture,” said the president today Luiz Inácio Lula da Silvawhen opening a BRICS business event.
The finance ministers of the Block’s member countries released a joint statement in which they also expressed concern about the tariff tension.
Consensus on Middle East
Negotiators also came to a consensus on war climbing in the Middle East, a theme that most shared the delegations. Iran, a member of the group since 2023, expected a harder tone from BRICS about the conflict in that region, according to a source that participated in the negotiation. But the final statement of the leaders will maintain “the same message” that the group released last month, in which it expressed “deep concern” with the bombing of Israel and the United States against Iran.
Iranian president, Masoud Pezeshkian, will not attend the meeting in Rio, to which his chancellor, Araqchi Abbas was sent. “The tendency is that the tone of the dome meeting will be careful” with the United States, said Marta Fernández, specialist in International Relations and Director of the Brics Policy Center of the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-RJ). China, for example, “has been trying to be contained in the Middle East, and a summit captured by this conflict may not be in Beijing’s interest.”
Following the ordered bombing in June by Donald Trump against Iranian nuclear facilities, the BRICS issued “a fully vague statement” about the conflict, said Oliver Stuenkel, professor of international relations at the Getúlio Vargas Foundation (FGV). The reason was the “divergences between members,” with countries like India, who negotiate commercial agreements with Washington and “don’t want to break down with the United States,” he added.
AI and Climate Change
Over the past two years, the BRICS List of Countries has included Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Arab Emirates, Ethiopia, Indonesia and Iran. The group was founded in 2009 to strengthen the so -called global south. In addition to the final text, BRICS will issue three other statements on climate change, artificial intelligence governance and health cooperation.
The Armed Forces mobilized more than 20,000 agents to shield Rio de Janeiro during the event, and will use missile fighters to control airspace, a measure that was not adopted since the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
