Roman Starovoit, the Russian transport minister removed today by President Vladimir Putin, committed suicide, according to what the website of the Izvestia newspaper writes.
Russian President Vladimir Putin removed the Minister of Transport after 14 months after 14 months. This was announced by the Kremlin on his Telegram channel without providing the reasons for the decision. Deputy Minister Andrei Nikitin was appointed Interim Minister waiting for the approval of the Duma and was received by Putin himself.
“I hope you will use energy, knowledge and organizational skills to resolve the most important issues in this sector,” Putin said to the new minister, underlining that transport is “one of the fundamental fields of activities in the country”.

The Russian Investigation Committee confirmed that Transport Minister Roman Starovoit, removed by his assignment by President Vladimir Putin, he committed suicide. A spokesman for the Committee, Svetlana Petrenko, specified that the lifeless body of Starovoit, with a gunshot wound, was found aboard his car in OvalSovo, a town west of Moscow. “The most accredited version is suicide,” added the spokesperson, cited by the Tass agency.
Starovoit, who became Minister of Transport in May 2024, had previously been governor of the Kursk region previously for five years, partially invaded by Ukrainian troops starting from August last year. Three months ago he had learned of an investigation for fraud relating to contracts for the construction of defensive structures in the region that had led to the arrest of Starovoit’s successor, Alexei Smirnov.
