Farmers beat a family of five to death in the India And they threw their bodies into a lake, accusing them of “practicing witchcraft” after the death of a child, police said on Tuesday (8). Three people were arrested and confessed to the crime, according to a police statement in the state of Bihar, in the north of the country. Among the victims were three women, including one of 75 years. The main accused believes that his son’s recent death was caused by one of the members of the murdered family, whom he blames for “practicing witchcraft,” according to the statement.

“After beating the victims to death, the attackers carried the bodies in a tractor and threw them into a lake,” the police added. Both the killers and the victims belonged to the Oraon tribe in Bihar, the poorest state in India, a predominantly Hindu region with at least 130 million inhabitants. Despite campaigns against superstition, belief in witchcraft is still widespread in rural areas, especially in isolated tribal communities. Some states, including Bihar, have promulgated laws to try to curb crimes against people accused of witchcraft and superstition.

Women are often labeled as witches and attacked, but the murder of this family of five stands out as a particularly heinous example in recent times. More than 1,500 people – the vast majority of them women – were killed in India on suspicion of witchcraft between 2010 and 2021, according to the National Crime Records Bureau. Some believe in occultism, but sometimes aggressors also have other reasons, such as taking the lands or properties of the victims.
