The Secretary of State for United States, Marco Rubioembarked on Thursday (10) in his first official visit to Southeast Asia since taking office in January this year. Rubio said that Southeast Asia countries can benefit from more advantageous rates than the rest of the world. He spoke to the press on the sidelines of Foreign Ministers meetings of the Southeast Asian Nations Association (Asean), which take place until Friday in the capital Kuala Lumpur. Rubio’s agenda also includes a crucial meeting with Russia’s Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov. The White House emphasized that despite the tariffs recently imposed by President Donald Trump on countries in the region, Southeast Asia remains a priority for the United States.

In the morning, Rubio attended a meeting in Kuala Lumpur with chancers from ten Asean member countries. This meeting was also attended by representatives of global powers such as Australia, China, European Union, Japan, Russia and South Korea. In his speech, Rubio stressed the importance of the region for the global future, stating that “the history of the next 50 years will be largely written here.” He also addressed the perception that the United States could be distracted by conflicts in other parts of the world, refuting this idea and stating that such distraction is impossible.

Despite the tensions generated by Trump’s tariff strategy, which foresees the increase in tariffs for at least seven ASEAN countries from August 1, Rubio is determined to reinforce US ties with their Asian partners. He must insist that Washington remains an indispensable, reliable and strategic ally for the region.
