Israel and Hamas exchange accusations and impasse waging negotiations for ceasefire in Gaza

Israel and the Hamas exchanged accusations on Saturday (12) about the responsibility for the impasse in negotiations for a ceasefire in the Gaza. Meanwhile, more than 20 Palestinians died in Israeli attacks, according to the local Civil Defense. The conversations, mediated by Qatar, Egypt and the United States, have taken place in Doha since last Sunday (6). The goal is to reach a 60 -day truce agreement in the conflict started with the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. In this scenario, ten Israeli hostages still in the possession of the Palestinian group would be released.

A Palestinian source stated that negotiations face “complex obstacles”, mainly due to Israel’s refusal to completely withdraw from the Gaza Strip. According to this source, Israel insists on maintaining their strength in more than 40% of the territory, where more than 2 million people lived affected by almost two years of war.

On the Israeli side, a leader accused Hamas of refusing to make concessions and adopt a “psychological war” to sabotage the process. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reiterated that the purpose of the offensive is to release hostages, destroy Hamas infrastructure and remove the Gaza Control group. Despite the impasse, there was some advance in points such as the exchange of hostages for Palestinian prisoners and the expansion of humanitarian aid.

In a joint statement, seven UN agencies alerted this Saturday to the critical scarcity of fuel in the Gaza Strip. According to the text, the situation may represent “a new unbearable load for a population on the brink of hunger.” Among the dead in the Israeli attacks on Saturday are a man, his wife and his son, hit at night in a field of displaced in Deir al-Balah, in the center of the territory.

The Israeli army said it had bombarded about 250 “terrorist targets” in the last 48 hours. Due to the restrictions of access and the limited presence of journalists on site, the information cannot be verified independently.

According to compiled official data, the Hamas attack in October 2023 left 1,219 Israelis dead, mostly civilians. The Israeli retaliation operations resulted in at least 57,882 Palestinian deaths, also mostly civilians, according to the Gaza Ministry of Health, whose data is considered reliable by the UN.

Netanyahu said he was willing to negotiate a permanent ceasefire, but imposes as a condition the disarmament of Hamas and the group’s renunciation of Gaza’s control, which has occupied since 2007. Hamas demands total removal of Israeli forces from all areas occupied after March 2, 2025. The impasse holds the scenario of violence and aggravates the humanitarian crisis in the Palestine.
