A fire hit a nursing home for elderly Massachusetts, United Statesthis Monday (14), killing nine people and cornering the residents, with some leaning in the windows and shouting for help, the authorities said. At least 30 people were injured. Firefighters attended the occurrence at the Gabriel House residence in Fall River, about 80 kilometers south of Boston, around 9:50 pm (local time) last Sunday (13), and came across dense smoke and flames in front of the building. The cause is under investigation, authorities said. Lorraine Ferrara, one of the 70 residents of the home, woke up with a neighbor knocking on her door. She tried to go through the smoke in the hallway, but came back. The irrigation system was throwing hot water on her back, so she took refuge in her room.
“It was full of smoke,” she said. “I opened the window as much as I could, shouting ‘help! Help! Second floor!’” He said. A firefighter broke the window and carried it down, she said. “I really thought I was going to die,” she said. “I thought there was no way out.” Other rescued were taken to hospitals. Jarren Oldrid described the scene as “very terrifying” while trying to find out if his 67 -year -old father Steven Oldrid was safe. He found him recovering from a smoke inhalation in a hospital. “It’s like a whirlwind trying to understand what is happening, how it could happen in such a serious way,” he said.

“Unimaginable tragedy”
Gabriel House was inaugurated in 1999 and has 100 units, according to the executive office of aging and independence of Massachusetts. Its site promotes studio apartments “for the elderly who cannot afford the luxury of an assisted housing”, as well as temporary homes for adults over a short distance from shops, restaurants and churches.
