(ANSA) – LISBON, DEC 25 – The Omicron variant of Covid-19 has become dominant in Portugal. This was reported by local health authorities, who recorded 12,943 cases in the last 24 hours, the peak since January 29, and 11 victims. The number of infected with the new strain as of December 22 is “estimated at 61.5%” of the total, according to what is announced by the Directorate General of Health, specifying however that the data on deaths and hospitalizations in intensive care remain “stable”.
Portugal, which is among the countries with the highest vaccination coverage rate in the world, has imposed several restrictions in recent weeks to combat the new wave of infections, including the obligation to smart working, the extension of the Christmas school holidays and the closure of bars and discos.
